youngsters not in civil services November 10, 2010

why do u think youngsters r not getting attracted towards civil services? The graph in maharashtra is rising but these are youngsters from smaller cities which is a good sign. Still not the IIT- IBM types. A feeling is growing that this country is not livable, let us run to USA. Unless we make it livable our children will become nomadic

  • Sunil Joglekar Probalby the current events and the behaviour of beaurocrats does not inspire the Youngsters!! Infact it puts them off.
  • Sadhana Natu Youngsters from smaller cities and those with less access to resources have more aspirational values! They want to contribute to their state and country! Small is beautiful! Bigger is not always better!
  • Leena Mehendale hello sunil, its a point to think. Have seen youngsters in civil services who take inspiration from beaurocrats of the ADARSH type.
  • Samrat Phadnis To my opinion: If I am living at a Taluka place; I see govt official & politician are the two major streams to get attracted as I have a least choice of option. If I am living in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, I have a set of choices & can select choice of Civil Service, only either by any inspiration or family background.
Beauracracy or Administration lacks innovation & creativity; may be the another reason why most of the younger generation takes time to select it as a carrier choice.
  • Sagar Godambe Good to know that youngsters from small cities are attracted towards civil service. The reason may be thay want to do something different and want to see our country a better place to live. About IIT-IBM types, the reason behind is the market force and that will there always. I liked that, there are people with different thinking growing.
  • Sunil Joglekar Yes leenatai that's true. I have known a few good engineers who were trying Govt Service only for the purpose of Making money. Sad but true.. I guess the OLd generation who believed in morals is now a rarity. Sorry if I am being cryptic
  • Anil Mydev Leena tai to tell u d trend IIT n IIM so supposed to be a WOW fctor among youngsters 1)try any matrimonail outlet 2) overseas attraction 3) space (residential)problems 4) ego, 1 up manship, these are d trends what, d results are taking rounds today' in urban" 2nd 3rd towns d pic is a different(in maharashtra) exeption is a Smal town in BIHAR prepares 140- 150 students for IIT with a result of 20- 24%, hw can 1 make a LINEAR graph given these inputs
  • Anil Mydev in urban Cities (MUMBAI)CHILDREN ARE PUSHED, to GO sm space in area is maitained else d ratio of SQ FT/per prsn is sample 500 sq ft flat 4 prsn= 125 sqft, Leena tai MY Views as a prfct ADARSH.......
  • Sagar Godambe We know there is corruption , but then we need to work against it. India is changing fast, so as the outcome, these scandals will happen and people will try to take a advantage of loop holes in our laws, but we need to change with time and experience and make our law more proof against all possible loop holes.
  • Anil Mydev Sagar I apprciate, but when loop holes HAVE another set of Loop HOLES.................this is d demo of ur country
  • Sagar Godambe Hi Anil, That is true but people have created these loop holes and they can fix it as well.
  • Anil Mydev Chitra Satish says in her INFO, Political: no Politics Please, then why u state Corruption, they are 2 sides of d same COIN
  • Anil Mydev In demcracy of TODAYS CONTEXT(run for money) when u say loop, loop to another loop, my understanding
  • Anil Mydev Sorry Leena tai u wanted d answers from d young gen next but I made sm attempts.............sorry
  • Ajit Waykar · Friends with Pramod Sawant and 44 others
Excuse me Leenaji... But, could you clarify what do you mean by ' STILL NOT IIT-IBM TYPES'. Are the people from smaller places who join civil services are inferior from those city based mates ? Or, the 'IIT- IBM types' have got some extraordinary talent which their counterparts lack who hell from smaller towns ? If not, then why are you comparing IITians or IBMers with the youngsters from smaller places ? Those who want to enter in civic services should have urge to change the things in positive way, his educational background doesn't matter.
  • Chitra Sathish Atleast i didnt hear a beaurocrats house being raided for disproportionate wealth nor heard about corruption by them till my college days. i had a good opinion about the beaurocrats .

But now on and often u get to see live. Then how can you think of youngster being attracted towards this service.

it was in 1989 i came to know about IIT,JIPMER,Veterinary, thats when i was in 11th std.
my son is in 3rd std he knows PMT , Veterinary Sci. so he is getting the inputs at the age of 8 what i got at the age of 16.
He too gets the inputs about good and bad things from us,friends n from media.so these things r grasped by them quickly n they frame it in their mind before we can impose something in that frame.

Every aspiring student wants to earn money n fame in a cleaner way.

so when they find their ideals/profession being maligned, the interest n the enthusiasm definitely subsides.

Running to US -- there r so many good reasons
  • Sagar Godambe I do agree that, we still lot of issues and problem to solve. But that is the way things happen, we need to make more and more people educated (education does not only mean getting degrees, it has much deeper meaning) and that leaves some possibility for those people fighting for good cause and improvement in the people's behavior socially and professionally. This does not necessary have happen suddenly because it the process, it may attain one level but it keep going along. We lack this from implementing through the government policies (there may be few exceptions) but what has happened now was never the dream for the people who fought for independence of India.

At the end running away from our own country and responsibilities is not the solution.
  • Milind Ranade 2 G spectrum scam loss is more than 100,000 crores. I can't imagine to even comprehend this amount. What is happening here? Is it real or a bad dream? If Indians are silent even at this stage, when are they going to wake up? At the scam of 1000000000000000000000 crores? This is insane. India IS dead!
  • Anil Mydev No Milind...INDIA is LIVING n GROWING in it....................000000000
  • Vaidehi Suryavanshi frankly speaking the exam system is very tedious n boring and it doesnt give choice to select developed individual who can be turned into decision makers. i think just the way army conducts practical test by SSB, upsc should also design sumthing similar. the pattern of exam is chenged but how much beneficial it will be has yet to be proved
  • Arun Gadre Yes indeed. Unfortunately over the last thirty years the NRI who bring in dollars are now more respecatble than the ones who resisted temptations to be NRI. Dllars is the sign of new Desh Bhakti.
  • Gokul Chaudhari-Patil Meendale Madam, I am 100% agree with u.
  • Jairaj Phatak That is not true! Many toppers educated in vernacular medium still want to join IAS. The English medium educated youngsters, comfortable in the morning only on a western style commode, obviously find the IAS and civil services unattractive. Many IITians and MBBS from Government Medical Colleges join the civil services every year. They are among the brightest. The IIM-alumni no longer join because IIMs are so expensive now. Is their a rationale in spending a million rupees to start on a government salary later? Civil services require people who can 'work like a horse and live like a hermit'. This idealism now remains only in vernacular medium schools.
  • Leena Mehendale responding to ajit waykar I may say that IIT-IIM represent only a type ( not my type --- I come from a very rural background -- hindi medium ), what I said was a comment that in comparison to earlier years now the trend of children going to civil service is much higher, though some may still point that it is not so for IIT-IIM. That is no value judgement on those who come. More imp is what is their aim while selecting this career?
  • Anil Mydev Jairaj dada, No I dnt agree fully with u, example given IF a Coaching Class Existed for IAS, (I dnt know any) in MUMBAI then the scenario wud be....?
  • Leena Mehendale today there are many coaching classes for civil services. Again what is the aim that is being inculcated? It is safe and comfortable? It is a tool to change the destiny of the nation? It is an honest job? It gives u power? It gives u scope to mint money? All are possible in this service. Hence the choice must be discussed more vigorously.
  • Anil Mydev In Short Gone r ur days Of Dedicated Work, National Pride, now d days a DEVIL of politicians n Burocrats Nexus
  • Sunil Shirgaonkar MANY YOUNGERS THINK THIS SERVICE IS THE ONLY WAY TO BE VERY
SAFE & COMFORTABLE IN OUR NATION.. IT IS NOT THEIR FAULT,BUT 150 YRS OF BRITISH REGIME MADE IT SO DIDI.
  • Jairaj Phatak Government and the public sector are still the biggest employers. IAS and central services are the topmost jobs available in this sector.

The big profit-making private sector shares the profit with employees and pays them better than government salaries. Those who are from metro-cities and want to live in metros prefer private setor jobs and those from smaller places like to work with government since impact of the government is felt more strongly such places.
  • Anil Mydev Sorry jairaaj dada when u say govt n public sectr n pvt sectr govt jobs n pvt jobs.. It makes me JITTERY, bcoz d unanswrd Q is this SHUD WE SERVE(momentarily frgt "pay packs") d nation or MYSELF, 2)myself is pvt or Nation, n the profit, here JAIRAJ dada 'Lucrative Profit are the wrds............Iam RED' but trying to find a path WITHIN where good govrness is prime
  • Swapna Jarag Leena ji.as we know small town's youngsters face the infrastructural underdevelopment in rural as well as semi urban areas ,n they know tht it is the Ziladhikari or Govt. officers who can try best to change d face of their town so in my opinion, it's quite natural tht they get attracted towards govt service and is a good sign
    too.

About the IIT-IBM -Youngsters at thr own think that thr should be youngsters in politics, but as it is the game of luck n hereditary now a days(to get entry in politics) , civil services is the best way to contribute/participate for the development of nation.
Me & my husband being owner of the IAS coaching Institute, ,can say, considering last 3-4 years that the trend is getting better as thr r many Dr.s,Engineers, and IIMers wish to join civil services, but yes still thr is need to take efforts on it.Today, Coaching Institutions also taking revolutionary steps in creating a good candidate to become a successful bureaucrat.
  • Shree Patil Unless we make it livable our children will become nomadic---- Will this happen in this moraly corrupt dominanat socity??????
  • Jairaj Phatak On Anil Mydev's comment, neither the government nor the private sector can absorb all the eligible applicants. So, some will prefer government while certain others will prefer private sector jobs. Certain others may want to have their own business. So to each, according to his preference and opportunity!
  • Leena Mehendale Vaidehi wrote something about boring exam system. should we not discuss it more ?
  • Anil Mydev Jairaaj dada, I think u have Opened d pandora box, satisfying all myths n tags attached, n a mix bag of all., 1 Q if I may ask d topic is different..but ur opinion on this, Nandan Nillekanni's project, he is from pvt sctr, so is it "Profit oriented"? for him?
  • Anil Mydev Sorry Leena tai I understand its ur wall, So urs n Jairaajdada Final Comments, will make it happpen,
  • Leena Mehendale Gayatri Natu wroe on email,
(http://nirman.mkcl.org/).
  • Leena Mehendale nilekani,s project will certainly bring profit to those who get outsourced contracts. It is not objectionable. But an honest business is supposed to bring profits to both the sides, hence business are more important than wars. But the question is will the project bring commensurate benefits to us the people whose money is being spent? I am not aware if the govt has set up parameters for MEASURING its success and what benefits are we supposed to get. Way back in 1995-96 during elections, smart cards were made at the cost of 98 crores and they became USELAESS before the next elections within 1 year.
